Exploring Cultures in Kindergarten

Our kindergarten class has embarked on an enriching exploration of culture, examining how people are both similar and different across our school and home environments. Through thoughtful discussion, students are learning to articulate their preferences and the reasons behind their choices, while discovering the special traditions and meaningful moments that define their family's unique culture. By comparing classroom culture with family culture, our students are developing a deeper understanding of the diverse backgrounds represented within our school community.

Building on our previous work in community connections and belonging, students are now learning to recognize, appreciate, and celebrate the various cultures present in our community. Through this ongoing learning, we are intentionally creating an inclusive classroom environment where every culture is valued and belongs. This foundational work in cultural awareness helps our youngest learners develop respect for diversity and lays the groundwork for becoming thoughtful, inclusive members of our broader community.

Thank you for joining our Parent Connect

Thank you to all the parents who joined us for Parent Connect, and a heartfelt thank you to our expert consultant, Kirsty Liljegren, for such a rich and inspiring session! We explored the remarkable, curious minds of our children, learning how curiosity drives children to investigate, focus, and explore, and how early experiences and repeated interactions help shape and strengthen growing brains. Research from neuroscience and voices like Carlina Rinaldi remind us that children are driven by "the enormous energy and potential of a hundred billion neurons" and an incredible curiosity to search for reasons in everything. And the best way to nurture all of this? Play! Supported by Harvard, the LEGO Foundation, and neuroscientists alike, play is at the heart of how young children learn best. These qualities, such as creative thinking, curiosity, lifelong learning, and resilience, are also among the World Economic Forum's top growing skills by 2030, reminding us that what we nurture in Early Childhood today truly matters for the future.

Parent Tip of the Week

Big Feelings Use Energy, Too!

Have you ever noticed that your child can have a wonderful day, full of excitement and fun, and still end up in tears over something seemingly small?

This week, we are exploring the emotional domain of Self-Reg. We often think of emotional stress as frustration, anger, or sadness. But excitement, anticipation, and even joy can use up a lot of energy, too! A busy school day, followed by homework, enrichment classes, or other activities, can leave children with very little time to recover, even when they enjoy everything they are doing.

Just as adults need time to unwind after a busy day, children do too. Unstructured play, quiet moments, and simply having time to do nothing in particular are not wasted time. These moments give children opportunities to release tension, restore their energy, and gradually return to a more balanced state.

Try this this week: Consider leaving a little space in your child's afternoon or weekend without planned activities. Let them choose what to do, whether it's playing, drawing, building, imagining, or simply relaxing. Notice how they respond when there is no expectation to accomplish anything.

Sometimes, the most valuable thing we can give our children is time to just be children.

Reminders

A friendly reminder that Parent-Teacher Conferences are coming up on October 29 and 30. Please keep an eye on your email, as you should have received information on how to sign up for your conference time. We look forward to connecting with each of you and sharing how your child is growing and thriving. Please also note that these days are for parents only, so there will be no school for students on those days. We look forward to seeing you!
