Middle School PE at Concordia Fosters Teamwork, Character, and a Love for Movement
The Middle School Physical Education program at Concordia International School Shanghai has kicked off the year with tremendous energy and purpose. Moving beyond the basics of physical skill, the department has placed a strategic emphasis on developing the whole student—building a foundation of knowledge, ability, and character that extends far beyond the gymnasium walls.
The core philosophy is clear: PE is more than sports; it's a dynamic classroom where students learn the fundamentals of a healthy life and positive community engagement.

A Curriculum Designed for Holistic Development
The semester has been a journey through diverse sporting units, including net and wall games, invasion games, striking and fielding, and throwing and catching. Each unit is carefully selected to do more than teach a specific sport; it serves as a vehicle for broader life lessons.
Teamwork and Collaboration:
In invasion games like basketball or soccer, students learn that success is a collective effort. They develop an understanding of roles, the importance of communication, and how to leverage each other's strengths to achieve a common goal.
Spatial Awareness and Strategy:
Net and wall games, such as badminton or volleyball, sharpen students' perceptual skills, teaching them to anticipate an opponent's move and strategically control the space on the court.
Sportspersonship, Resilience, and Social Skills:
Perhaps the most critical lesson woven into every activity is sportspersonship. Students are encouraged to compete with integrity, respect officials' decisions, and honor their opponents, whether they win or lose. Along the way, they learn resilience—how to respond to challenges, bounce back from mistakes, and persist when games become tough. These experiences foster empathy, grace under pressure, and the social skills necessary for resolving conflicts and building strong, respectful relationships.
"Students have been largely successful throughout these units. They are not just developing physical literacy; they are building collaboration, strategic thinking, resilience, and a deep-seated respect for the process of learning and playing together."

Building Virtue, One Friday at a Time
Aligning with the school's commitment to character education, the PE program integrates Concordia’s Virtues of the Month into weekly health lessons every Friday. These short discussions at the start of class connect concepts like respect, responsibility, perseverance, and resilience directly to physical activity. This powerful integration ensures that the values taught in the classroom are lived and experienced on the court and field.
A Culture of Activity: Beyond the Scheduled Class
The commitment to physical well-being at Concordia Middle School doesn’t end with the PE bell. A vibrant culture of voluntary activity has taken root, demonstrating a genuine student-led passion for movement.
Morning Gym:
A resounding success, the morning gym session regularly sees over sixty students energizing their day with physical activity before their first class. The scene is one of joyful self-organization: students seamlessly form games of badminton, basketball, and volleyball, demonstrating initiative and inclusivity as they welcome their peers to join the matches while fostering cross-grade connections.
Lunchtime Intramurals:
The leadership and physical skills honed in PE find further expression in the lunchtime intramural program. With each grade level receiving three sessions in a 10-day cycle, the PC Gym is consistently jam-packed with activity. This program provides a fantastic, less formal arena for students to apply their skills and simply enjoy the fun of friendly competition.

The Final Score: Developing Lifelong Learners and Leaders
Through the combined efforts of the structured PE curriculum, open gym, intramurals, and extracurricular activities (ECAs), Concordia Middle School students are on a clear path to success. They are not only enhancing their physical literacy and spatial awareness but are also cultivating crucial social and emotional skills—including the resilience needed to navigate setbacks and push their personal boundaries.
They are learning to be supportive teammates, gracious competitors, and effective leaders. By making daily physical activity an accessible and enjoyable pillar of school life, Concordia is ensuring its students are well-equipped for the challenges ahead—both on and off the field.
