MS Updates and Announcements for Feb 9 to 13
February has brought us closer to the Chinese New Year holiday and break. With it, we also have a new Virtue of the Month, goodness. Our Virtues of the Month come from the Fruit of the Spirit, but defining “goodness” to children isn’t always clear. When we ask our children to “be a good person”, we’re saying many things at the same time. Be honest, be caring, be compassionate, be kind, be polite... the list can go on and on. This can make it a bit unclear for our kids to understand perfectly. While we often talk about The Golden Rule in the Middle School, “treat others the way you want to be treated”, we’re implying that everyone wants to be treated well. The quote I often use with my own children is from Gandhi, “be the change you wish to see in the world.” Each and every one of us has a responsibility to help make the world a better place, every single day. That means being an Upstander (standing up for your friends and classmates) when you see someone misbehaving or treating others poorly. This requires courage, because as adults, we know how hard it is to always do the right thing and stand up for others.
In this article from Minno, we learn how to teach our kids strategies to help them understand how to be good when the world often doesn’t reward us for it. We hope that you can find time to sit with your child and discuss the importance of being “good” and always doing what is right in every situation, even when it is hard.
The Virtue of the Month for February is Goodness.
