Our MS Trips are only a week away. We hope you spend some time having conversations with your child about the importance of the educational trip. Not only will they be learning about local cultures, participating in various activities, and providing service to the local community, but it is a time for community building in the Middle School. This is a time that teachers and students can connect outside of a classroom and see each other as members of the same community, not just their roles as student and teacher.

Virtue of the Month - Love

This month, we are focusing on Love—not simply as a feeling, but as a choice to care for others through our words and actions. During the middle school years, students are becoming increasingly aware of friendships, belonging, and how their actions affect others. One meaningful way to practice love is to look beyond ourselves and intentionally notice when someone else may need kindness, encouragement, or inclusion. Parents can help by asking questions such as, “Who might need a little extra kindness today?” or “What is one thing you could do to help someone feel included?” Small acts—inviting someone to join a conversation, checking in on a friend, thanking someone sincerely, helping without being asked, or standing up when someone is being excluded—can become powerful expressions of love.

At home, families can make love a daily practice by choosing one simple “act of love” each day or week. Consider challenging your child to write an encouraging note to someone, help a sibling without being asked, call or message a grandparent, or do something thoughtful for a classmate. Parents can also model the virtue by talking openly about moments when they chose patience, forgiveness, generosity, or compassion. Resources such as Greater Good in Education from UC Berkeley and Character.org’s resources for families offer practical ideas for developing kindness, empathy, and positive relationships at home. Ultimately, love is most powerful when it moves beyond what we feel and becomes something we choose to do.
